Hyundai Motor Group announced today that will launch a separated stand-alone Genesis Brand, and now we start to receive new details of the new luxurious brand. The one we expected as new generation Equus, will turn into Genesis G90 model and will debut at the New York Motor Show in April 2016, after a local reveal in December 2015.
The new G90 (or EQ900 as will be called in South Korea) will take the latest iteraction of brand’s 2.0 Fluidic Sculpture design and its also confirmed that will use for the first time (as we said exclusively), a new 3.3-liter Turbo with gasoline direct injection (T-GDi) engine, making it 15 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor, the final output it has not been revealed yet, but according to the specs table used by Hyundai, this engine will have 365 hp.
While the facelift Genesis Sedan arrive as 2017MY, will turn into G80 model, a third sedan called the G70 follows a year later, and by 2021 Genesis will have a total of six dedicated, rear-wheel-drive models including a midsize crossover and an SUV.
The current Genesis Coupe, a performance-oriented rear-wheel-drive model, will not be carried into the Genesis subbrand.
This summer at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Hyundai unveiled the Vision G concept. The coupe, sporting a 5.0-liter V-8 engine and self-opening doors, signals Hyundai’s plans for a successor to the Genesis Coupe, which launched in South Korea more than seven years ago.
“This represents an inspiration for our future family of vehicles,” design chief Schreyer said at the time. So probably that Vision G coupe concept could turn into the new G90 inspiration as well as the future models, but, if you check latest spy shots of the Equus compared to this Vision G, there are many similar elements, like the headlights.
First released seven years ago and partly modified in 2009, the Equus sold over 10,000 units a year until last year. The US-market debut could arrive earlier 2016, at the Detroit International Motor Show. Alongside this confirmation, we also received a new set of spy pictures while we can see more about the interior of Hyundai’s new flagship sedan.
